About A/Prof Peter Fahmy

A/Prof Peter Fahmy is a General Cardiologist with subspecialty training in Interventional and Structural Cardiology.  A/Prof Fahmy’s rooms are at Norwest Private Hospital in Bella Vista, Sydney and Katoomba in the Blue Mountains in Greater Western Sydney.

Educational Experience

  • Peter was awarded his Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Otago (New Zealand) in 2004.
  • He completed his advanced training in cardiology at MonashHEART (Melbourne) and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2011.
  • Peter was awarded his Doctorate of Philosophy in Medicine from the University of Sydney in 2015 for his research in the prevention of sudden cardiac death.
  • Peter spent two years at Vancouver General and St Paul’s Hospitals, Vancouver, Canada where he trained in interventional and structural cardiology, in the world-leading institute for coronary artery and structural heart disease by pioneers in the field.

Bio

  • A/Prof Peter Fahmy’s medical career started when he enrolled at Otago University, New Zealand (established in 1869) and entered the medical school of Otago graduating in 2004.
  • He moved to Australia in 2007 to continue his medical career in cardiology, where he completed his internal medicine training at Westmead Hospital (Sydney) then speciality training in Cardiology at Monash Heart (Melbourne).
  • Peter undertook a PhD in gene therapy at the University of Sydney and was always drawn to interventional cardiology.
  • He travelled to Vancouver Canada to undertake a Fellowship in Interventional and Structural Cardiology at Vancouver General and St Paul’s Hospitals, one of the most innovative and prestigious academic institutions. A/Prof Fahmy trained under the favourable direction of Professor John Webb, the Pioneer for percutaneous transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and Professor Jacqueline Saw, a world leader in spontaneous coronary dissection and left atrial appendage closures.
  • A/Prof Fahmy is the team leader of the Norwest Private Hospital Heart Team involved in setting up the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) program at Norwest Private Hospital.
  • A/Prof Peter Fahmy is also a Proctor (ie he teaches other cardiologists) how to undergo TAVI, LAA and PFO’s.
  • Peter was appointed as Head of the Cardiology Department at Norwest Private Hospital in 2025.

In addition to the Interventional & structural and general cardiology, A/Prof Peter Fahmy has clinical experience in:

  • Percutaneous coronary intervention
  • Rotablation
  • Intravascular ultrasound
  • Optical coherence tomography
  • ASD and PFO closures
  • Left atrial appendage closures
  • TAVI

Publishing

A/Prof Peter Fahmy has published and co-authored more than a dozen manuscripts and presented them at multiple international and national conferences. A/Prof Fahmy has also c-authored a book chapter on left Atrial Appendage closures. A/Prof Fahmy’s aim is to capitalise on his skills and help establish and make available revolutionary life saving, surgery sparing technology in suburbs within the northern part of the Greater Western Sydney, Sydney’s Blue Mountains, Dubbo, Mudgee and Orange in New South Wales, Australia.

On a personal note, A/Prof Fahmy spends most of his spare time training in soccer and cycling around the beautiful pathways of Sydney.
